“The funniest sculpture in the world, version 1.1: rough cut)“ installation view, The Box, Los Angeles A pedestal, covered in carpet, which functions as a stage or dais for a performance. The piece is to be activated by one or more performances each time it is shown. The performance consists of an actor or actress working his or herself into a state of hysterical laughter, working also to try and communicate that laughter to the audience. The piece was also accompanied by two text works, laughter poems that are meant to be read or rather laughed out loud by their reader.
“ Things for things, version 1.1: Soft balls for hard asses“ This is a work in progress, a long-term project that I am working on at the Wild Burro Rescue Ranch in Olancha, California. This ranch is a sanctuary for endangered wild donkeys, who are currently threatened by ranchers and government-sponosred hunts. I am interested in making objects for animals, objects that are not functional, but rather playful or experimental, objects which the animals have to experiment with and find a way to enagage with, much like the way artworks function for humans. I initially went there just to meet the owner of the ranch and learn more about the animals, and brought along weather balloons of different sizes, which I then filled with a mixture of helium and oxygen. These balloons were a sort of proposition I made to the donkeys, to see how they react to new things. I am currently working on another series of objects, inspired in large part by the discussions I had with the owner and caretakers of the ranch. The project will be pursued for as long as it seems worthwhile to pursue, and I am also currently working on other projects involving different species of animals, specifically animals which, like donkeys, are domesticated yet retain a wild streak.
